Dr. Sue’s Dream
Dr. Sue was a beloved pediatrician who dedicated her life to nurturing and caring for her patients and their families, far beyond the call of duty. Tragically, she was taken much too young after suffering a debilitating illness. Before her passing, she had assembled a collection of books in her home, and friends, neighbors and patients had often visited to enjoy her “library.” After her passing, a letter she wrote told of her desire that Jewish children’s books be donated to the synagogue in her memory. We decided to expand on her wishes and establish a library to honor her legacy.
The Dr. Sue Weisberg Children’s Library is not only a place of Jewish children’s books and literature, it hosts a wealth of activities, classes and programs, including Mini Chefs, Mommy and Me, and Story Hour. The goal of each program is to educate and engage children in a fun and meaningful way that would make Dr. Sue proud.
The library is already a peaceful haven for families to enjoy and discover the wonder of childhood, and the world around them through the lens of Torah and Judaism. We look forward to continuing to grow and expand our programming to meet the needs of all those in our community.
The Library
With your generosity, the library was established in 2015. It was opened in the Central Avenue Synagogue in Highland Park, Illinois. Since then, the library has grown into what it is today.
This year, the Dr. Sue Library found a home across the street from the Central Avenue Synagogue in the former First Midwest Bank. The library hosts a collection of books and other media, and has been the venue for numerous successful programs.
Expansion & Renovation
Our goal for the coming year is to increase the library’s programming, classes and activities. In order to allow for this growth, we will need to renovate and redesign much of the building in order for it to be suitable for a children’s library and learning center.
